Marker dedication held for Union Civil War Veteran

GREENE COUNTY, Mo. – Members of Mary Whitney Phelps Tent # 22 Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War held a marker dedication for the Union Civil War Veteran Private George W. D. Kirkland.

Private Kirkland fought and died in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. He was buried in a mass grave and later re-buried in an “unknown” grave in the Springfield National Cemetery. Now there is a new marker with his name in the Hazelwood Cemetery.

“Private George W. D. Kirkland enlisted in the Union Army in 1861, just a couple of months before the Battle of Wilson’s Creek,” said Sarah Cunningham, Superintendent for Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. “He fought there and unfortunately was killed in battle.”

Officials speak on Lake of the Ozarks boat crash that injured 8

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — A boat crashed onto the Lake of the Ozarks shore and hit a house late Saturday night.

The driver of the boat was arrested for operating a boat under the influence  

Missouri State Highway Patrol believes alcohol and speed were likely factors in the crash.

 “A lot of people get confused and then they get confused on the landmasses as well,” said Captain Travis Coleman with Tow Boat US. “So, this is a unique navigational challenge, if you will, at night.”

Missing Cassville doctor’s death to be investigated as a homicide, according to brother

CASSVILLE, Mo. — After nine days, Dr. John Forsyth’s body was found with a gunshot wound in the Lost Bridge South area of Beaver Lake in Benton County, Arkansas.

John Forsyth’s brother, Richard Forsyth, says he spoke with authorities in Arkansas on May 31. Richard Forsyth says detectives told him they are investigating his brother’s death as a homicide.

Community still in shock after Mountain Grove church fire

MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. — The spirit of a congregation in Mountain Grove and the community that surrounds it will not be broken.

The latest example comes from this past weekend, when the Southside Baptist Church caught fire.

“The devil is not going to defeat us, that the Lord has us under this wing, and he’s going to protect us and keep us protected.” Mary Hicks, a member of the church said.

People, agencies react to Strafford fire killing 1-year-old

STRAFFORD, Mo. – The community of Strafford is reacting to the news of a 1-year-old girl killed Tuesday night in a mobile home fire on Highway OO.

OzarksFirst spoke to family members who were on the scene.

“I’m trying not to cry,” said Betty Kammerer. “I saw them carrying the baby to the ambulance.”

Vigil to be held for Nashville shooting victim with Houston, MO roots

HOUSTON, Mo. — The reverberations of the March 27 Nashville shooting were felt across the country, including in Houston, Missouri, where some residents have ties to one of the six victims.

Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9, is the granddaughter of retired Houston dentist Dr. Joe Richardson and his wife Kathy. Evelyn’s mother, Katy Richardson-Dieckhaus grew up in Houston. Evelyn was one of the three children who were killed in the shooting.

Man mourns brother after escaping car swept away in Wright County

GROVESPRING, Mo. — Two young men are dead after floodwaters swept their vehicle off the road in Grovespring early this morning.           

Another man managed to escape, only to learn hours later that his friend and brother had drowned. The man tells KOLR10 his group of friends were coming back from Springfield around midnight when they went over a hill. They were hit by water and tried to slow down but were swept away.
